using cloudmqtt i was able to set up a free mqtt broker in the cloud and point my girlfriend’s apple phone and my android phone at the server using their app. it meant that we didn’t have to punch any holes in the firewall and we could get a reasonably accurate location on each other. i then went to the map in ha and there my little icon was. the goal of all of this was to be able have our home know if we’re home or not. we will poll the life360 entity to see if i am home or not. now the slightly trickier bit is that if one of us is away, we need to check the state of the other person’s input_boolean to see if they’re away too.
that flow above, the coding in ha is all you need to be able to turn the input_booleans on and off according to if either (or both) of us are home or away. “off”) empty, because i didn’t want the lights to be turned off by bigtimer, as we have our own bedtime routines that take care of that for us. if you did find this useful, and would consider supporting the blog, please take a look at my most recent book. the installation is sitting in a 6th gen celeron nuc, and i live in a fairly decent 4g/lte area. i haven’t even checked the app for probably 4-5mths. we also have companion apps on our ipads and that too can cause issues if we forget to disable tracking there. you know what they say, if it ain’t broke….
when it comes to home automation, your home needs to be smart enough to know if the home is occupied or not. if you have a larger home, your smart home may not be able to “see” that you’re still home when you’re playing hide-and-seek in the closet. once set, you can tell home assistant to send a ping to your device every few minutes, and if your device responds to the ping, home assistant will know you’re home. this setting allows you to define the number of minutes home assistant should wait before it marks you as away. it can also detect when you’re on the way home, and how far away you are from home to determine if it should turn the heater on to warm the house for your imminent arrival. pic.twitter.com/07uwuw8ibo these alarm panels, either software or hardware based (like this z-wave model), allow you to enter a code, and then disarm the system.
you can extend this from your phone, to things like a camera reading your cars license plate in the garage, then the group will be marked as home as well. in the example above i mentioned that you could have a camera checking to see if your car is parked in your garage, and if it is, mark you as home. using the right probability settings, home assistant would be able to determine that i am probably at home, and hence mark me as home. if that’s the case, then the only downside would be that you then can’t use home assistant as a security system, as anyone who comes through a door would “disarm” home assistant when it marks the status as home. the mqtt topic i think is then added to home assistant which you can use in a group, like i’ve done here. do you put home assistant on all the extra pi’s?
