the more an assistant knows about you, your home and its other inhabitants, the better it is able to help you. in the last four years, they have been working on a virtual assistant named almond. with almond, you can run a virtual assistant at home, that can tell you the news or control your house. the almond team has updated almond to make it aware of the different device types in home assistant and allow almond to control them. by default, almond server will rely on a cloud version of luinet, but it is possible to run it locally. if you want to have an assistant in your home that knows everything about you, it needs to be one that cares about privacy. but it’s open source, and with the home assistant community, we’ll work with the almond team on making it better.
almond is not the full story. in home assistant 0.102, we’re introducing a new speech-to-text integration to complement this. now we almost have all the pieces for a voice assistant built-in to home assistant, and so we decided to finish it off by introducing a new project called ada. to make it easier to add speech-to-text and text-to-speech integrations to your system, nabu casa is introducing a new beta service offering speech-to-text and text-to-speech services to home assistant cloud subscribers, powered by azure cognitive services. we want to be able to offer home automation that keeps working if there is no internet. with the current approach, some things will still run in the cloud, but the home data and control stays local. with almond and ada, we’ve put the building blocks in place to create voice assistants. i hacked together a quick prototype to allow you to talk to almond via a telegram bot!
i want to control home assistant via voice commands. the important thing is that i want to do without any cloud services. i’m mainly interested in which hardware i can realize this with. but with this solution i could only send voice commands in the room where the pi is located, i.e. in my wishful thinking i send my voice commands via my smartwatch (k.i.t.t. i am thinking more of additional hardware like amazon echo dot / echo show or google home / nest. has anyone of you already configured such a setup and can recommend it to others?
if you still have installation instructions and would like to send them to me – would be great. rhasspy just released ‘voltron’ v2.5 which is a very complete redesign of the previous 2.4.x series, which i’m still running. i am actually more interested in hardware configuration. must it necessarily be microphones connected to the pi or can i use “external” devices from amazon or google? the only solution that work flawless is get some amazon echo for each room and you can do more stuff that you need, the down side is it use a amazon cloud for alexa with rhasspy, you would need to be within voice range (typically 1 to 3 meters) of the pi and microphone. on this way you can easily talk to your ha android app which triggers the automation on server side. razzo04 is working on an android mobile app which should act as satellite for rhasspy: github – razzo04/rhasspy-mobile-app: a simple mobile app for rhasspy. · issue #4 · razzo04/rhasspy-mobile-app · github just imagine, you can switch on the air conditioning of your car by speaking to your watch.
