addressed to the “insteon community,” the note says pandemic-related supply-chain issues forced the company to seek a buyer in november, 2021. despite “several interested parties” coming forward, none could close a deal and “the company was assigned to a financial services firm in march to optimize the assets of the company.” we don’t for certain, but that very much sounds as though the company will be liquidated to satisfy its creditors. when apple introduced its homekit smart home technology in 2015, insteon was just one of two smart-home hub manufacturers to support it, and its insteon hub pro looked promising. lutron was the other company with a homekit hub, and i thought it had the better product when i reviewed both the lutron caséta wireless smart bridge pro and the insteon hub pro in the middle of that year. one of the best sources of information on migrating your insteon smart home products is on the r/insteon subreddit.
all insteon products on the smarthome.com website are labeled “sold out.” other smart home products listed on the site are sold by amazon. in our view, the aeotec smart home hub (based on samsung smartthings technology) is the best diy smart home system overall. each of those hubs use wi-fi and widely supported smart home protocols such as zigbee and z-wave, so if those hubs ever become obsolete, you won’t be left holding the bag needing to buy all new components in addition to a new hub. michael is techhive’s lead editor, with 30+ years of experience covering the tech industry, focusing on the smart home, home audio, and home theater.
i actually kind of dislike the look of caseta switches tho, they also have a limit on number of devices that i would need to evaluate. although, i think it is limited on the number of repeaters and its a big house. they all worked reliably but i made a game of guessing how long it would take for the z-wave devices to respond to the command. although, i think it is limited on the number of repeaters and its a big house. you’ll need the level 2 course due to the amount of devices you’ll have and the need for 2 repeaters. although, i think it is limited on the number of repeaters and its a big house. there’s a handful of devices that are only available in the l2 programming but they are niche and not a lot of people deploy them because they are niche so they do take more “care” in setup.
this, assumes, that caseta and ra2 select doesn’t allow me to have the abilty to have programmed logic. i understand that other systems (ex: insteon) are faster because they are grouped directly, but, being zwave all the way, i have programs that group lights to go on or off at same time. do you have any devices that are not 100% reliable to a on/off command or that phantom on? i have some 80 zwave devices, including many switches and i have learned that ge/jasco and homeseer are the better ones. i think that the maximum number of devices that i have in a group program is about 10, and sometimes these take more than 2 seconds, but my strong suspicion is that this is because about 4 of these devices are still old pre zwave plus. not only that, lack of flexibility, as well as all the different variations of devices and their parameters that needs to be set. i don’t want to sense any difference between the 20 or so outside lights i have on at dusk.
